“My journey with Kapable changed how I think. My thoughts are clearer, and I can structure my ideas better.”
From the beginning, I believed that being technically strong was the most important part of being a good leader. I have spent years working in the oil and gas industry, focusing on strategic planning, digital initiatives, and improving operational processes, particularly in process safety.
My role involves looking several years ahead, identifying opportunities for growth, anticipating challenges, and introducing new ways of working. It also requires me to interact with consultants, vendors, colleagues, and other stakeholders. Over time, I realised that technical knowledge alone was not enough to communicate my ideas effectively or persuade others to see things from my perspective.
I began noticing this gap about a year before joining Kapable. I knew what I wanted to communicate, but I struggled to present my ideas with the clarity and precision I wanted. I explored different training options, but I was looking for something that would help me become a more effective communicator and leader.
When I joined Kapable, I wanted to learn how to organise my thoughts, express myself clearly, and build stronger relationships with the people I worked with.
One of the biggest changes I have noticed is in the way I think. Earlier, my thoughts would often feel scattered, making it difficult to communicate my ideas in a structured way. Now, I can organise my thoughts more clearly, generate better ideas, and approach conversations with a stronger sense of direction. I have also started noticing improvements in my writing and document preparation.
Another significant change has been in how I approach people. I used to be quite aggressive when trying to get work done. I would focus on the task and expect others to deliver, sometimes overlooking the challenges they were facing.
Recently, I had to ask a team member to complete a task while he was already managing another assignment that required him to travel offshore. Instead of simply pushing him to finish the work, I took the time to understand his situation, sit with him, and plan the task together. I gave him clear directions, and he was able to complete it despite his demanding schedule.
That experience helped me see how understanding someone’s circumstances can make a difference in getting work done.
I have also become more aware of my strengths. Planning, strategising, and giving clear direction have always come naturally to me. Earlier, I did not always know how to use these strengths effectively when working with others. Now, I am learning to combine them with a better understanding of people and situations.
There is still room for improvement. I want to become more precise and assertive in my communication, especially when I have to respond spontaneously or handle unexpected questions. High-pressure situations can still be challenging, but I am more aware of what I need to work on and how I can improve.
As I look ahead, I want to continue developing the confidence, clarity, and credibility that help people trust my judgment. This journey has helped me understand that leadership is about much more than getting work done. It is about how you communicate, how you understand people, and how you bring them together to achieve a shared goal.
