“I no longer fear difficult conversations. I’ve learned to trust my voice, communicate my ideas, and approach challenges with confidence.”

A career built around technical expertise and operational leadership had taught me how to manage people, deliver results, and navigate complex responsibilities. Yet, despite years of experience, I often found myself holding back in meetings, unsure whether I could express my ideas as effectively as I wanted to. I knew my subject well, but communicating that knowledge in a way that gained visibility and influence was a different challenge altogether.
My professional journey began with the Indian Navy, where I developed a strong foundation in operations and people management. After exploring opportunities in the corporate world and entrepreneurship, I returned to the Navy. Over time, I became comfortable in my role, understanding my responsibilities, expectations, and deliverables. However, I wanted to grow beyond that familiar environment and explore a different kind of professional challenge.
One experience stayed with me. I had shared an idea with a senior colleague, and later watched that same idea receive considerable appreciation when it was presented in a meeting. It made me realise that having good ideas was only part of the equation. I needed to learn how to communicate them confidently and establish my own professional visibility.
That was one of the reasons I joined Kapable. Initially, I was uncertain whether the programme would help me make the changes I was looking for. I had developed certain beliefs about my communication abilities, including doubts about my English and whether I could express myself well in important conversations. Gradually, through the sessions and regular practice, I began to challenge those assumptions.
The turning point came when I started applying what I had learned in conversations with senior stakeholders. I remember presenting an idea to my skip-level manager, something that would previously have felt difficult to do. This time, I was able to communicate it more clearly and confidently. That experience gave me a sense of achievement and showed me that I could create opportunities for myself by speaking up.
My approach to leadership also began to change. I became more aware of how I responded to people, especially when work was delayed or someone was struggling. Earlier, I would sometimes focus so heavily on the task that I overlooked the circumstances of the person involved. I now try to understand the situation before responding, balancing the need to achieve an outcome with the importance of maintaining relationships.
This awareness has also changed how I approach difficult conversations. I no longer automatically view disagreements as personal conflicts. Instead, I try to focus on the objective, understand the other person’s perspective, and find a way forward. I am still learning to apply this consistently, particularly in unexpected situations, but I have become more conscious of my reactions.
As I prepare to move into a sales-oriented role, I am excited about stepping into a new environment where communication and relationship-building will be central to my work. I want to become someone who can explain complex ideas simply, connect with different stakeholders, and create meaningful impact through conversations.
Looking back, the most significant change has been the confidence to participate rather than hold myself back. I want to continue building on that progress, practising what I have learned, and becoming a more effective communicator and leader with every new challenge.
