“I know now that leadership is about understanding people, navigating complex systems, and communicating ideas in ways that bring others along.”

For a long time, I viewed leadership through the lens of expertise. I believed that being a good leader meant knowing your domain, understanding the problems in front of you, and having the ability to solve them. Over time, however, I began to realise that being good at my work did not always mean I could influence how that work was done or bring others along with me.
I have spent nearly seven years working at a fintech startup, where I currently lead AI and digital sciences. My work sits at the intersection of technology and finance, helping build AI-assisted workflows that improve decision-making and operational efficiency. I enjoy solving complex problems, exploring new ideas, and understanding how things work but as my responsibilities evolved, I started recognising the importance of skills that went beyond technical knowledge.
One of the biggest realisations for me was that knowing how to solve a problem does not guarantee that you will get the opportunity to solve it. Being able to communicate your ideas, work with stakeholders, and understand the dynamics of an organisation is equally important. I wanted to become more effective at these aspects of my professional life, particularly as I prepared to move into a new role and explore a broader scope of work.
My journey with Kapable helped me become more aware of how I communicate and how I respond to different situations. I began paying closer attention to my own behaviour, especially when things did not go as planned. I realised that I sometimes focused so heavily on outcomes that I overlooked the emotions and perspectives involved. Becoming more mindful of my reactions helped me understand how I could approach conversations with greater consideration.
Another important shift was recognising how much the way we communicate affects the people around us. I started paying attention to the language I used, the way I structured my thoughts, and how I could make complex ideas easier to understand. Working in AI, I was accustomed to technical terminology that felt natural to me but could be unfamiliar to others. Learning to simplify my explanations and use relatable examples helped me see how communication could make my ideas more accessible.
I also became more conscious of how humour influences relationships. I started thinking about how my words might affect someone else and how I could express myself in ways that encouraged connection rather than discomfort. This awareness extended beyond the workplace into my personal relationships as well.
Perhaps the most significant change has been how I understand leadership today. I see it as a combination of expertise, collaboration, and the ability to understand the larger system in which people work. A leader needs to recognise different perspectives, navigate competing priorities, and help people work towards a shared outcome.
I know there is still a long way to go, but I now approach communication with greater awareness and intention. As I step into a new professional chapter, I want to continue practising these skills, reflecting on my experiences, and becoming more effective at bringing people and ideas together.
