For over a decade, I have built my career around content, language and user experience. Today, I work as a UX Content Designer at Google, contributing to projects that shape how people interact with digital products. I have worked with talented teams, solved complex problems and contributed to meaningful projects. Yet, despite the experience I had gained, I often struggled to communicate the value of my work in a way that resonated with senior stakeholders.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was making my contributions visible. I could explain what I had done, but I found it difficult to connect my work to the larger business impact. I would focus on the details of a task rather than explaining how it had influenced outcomes. This often left me questioning my own capabilities, and I sometimes felt that I was not doing justice to the work I was putting in.
That feeling became particularly strong during a meeting where I was unexpectedly asked to speak about my contribution to a project in front of several senior leaders. I had played an important role in the project, but I had not prepared to present it. When I was handed the opportunity to speak, I froze. I struggled to articulate my thoughts and left the conversation feeling that I had failed to communicate the value of my work.
That experience made me realise that I needed to work on how I presented myself and my contributions. When I came across Kapable, I recognised many of the challenges I had been facing. I wanted to become more confident in high-stakes conversations, communicate with greater clarity and ensure that the people around me could understand the impact of my work.
One of the most significant changes has been learning to organise my thoughts before speaking. I have become more conscious of what the other person needs to understand and how I can communicate that message without overwhelming them with details. I am learning to connect my work to measurable outcomes and explain how my contributions create value for the business.
I have also become more aware of how I pace my speech and respond to unexpected questions. Earlier, I would often speak at length, trying to include every detail I thought might be relevant. Today, I am more comfortable pausing, identifying the central message and building my response around it. This has helped me approach conversations with greater clarity and composure.
My experience with Kapable has also helped me recognise that confidence grows when I understand how to communicate my own strengths and contributions. I no longer view every challenging conversation as a test of whether I belong in the room. Instead, I am learning to focus on the value I bring and how I can make that value more visible.
I know that there is still more to learn, and I want to continue practising these skills in my everyday work. I am leaving Kapable with a clearer understanding of how I want to communicate, greater confidence in my ability to express my ideas and the tools to keep improving.
