“Kapable helped me bring structure to my thoughts, stay focused in conversations, and respond with more confidence”.
When I joined Kapable, I was already stepping into a much larger leadership role. After spending my career in the energy sector across India, Qatar and the UAE, I had moved from leading a team of around 10 people in a specific operational function to managing a multidisciplinary team of nearly 60 people, while also working with shareholders, regulators and other stakeholders.
The scale of my role had changed, and I quickly realised that my communication needed to evolve with it.
I had always had plenty of thoughts, knowledge and experience to share. My challenge was bringing those ideas together with enough structure and precision. I could find myself speaking for too long, going off on tangents and losing the focus of the conversation. High-stakes situations also made me more conscious of how I would be perceived and whether I was expressing myself in the right way.
At the time, I wasn’t entirely convinced that these skills could actually be developed. I believed some people were naturally better communicators and leaders, while others simply weren’t. My journey with Kapable changed that belief.
Over the course of the program, I became much more intentional about how I communicate. I started organising my thoughts before speaking, focusing on the key points I wanted to convey and becoming more conscious of how I was connecting with different audiences. I also became more comfortable pausing, thinking through a question and then responding instead of feeling the need to answer immediately.
One of the biggest changes was in how I approached people. Earlier, my interactions with my team could sometimes become very transactional: discussing a task, checking a deadline and moving on. I began paying more attention to the person behind the task. I started asking about people’s situations, understanding their perspectives and bringing more sensitivity into everyday interactions.
This shift also changed how I participated in meetings. I had a personal rule of waiting until everyone else had spoken before contributing, partly out of respect. I realised that this could mean missing the opportunity to contribute altogether. I began speaking when I had something valuable to add rather than automatically waiting until the end, and that made a noticeable difference to my confidence.
The impact became especially clear during my final session with Kapable. I arrived without knowing exactly what the session would involve and had done no formal preparation. I was put into an unexpected podcast-style conversation and asked questions one after another. Instead of feeling anxious about being in the spotlight, I found myself speaking comfortably, with clarity and conviction.
That moment made me realise how much had changed.
I joined Kapable wanting to improve my communication. I left with something broader: a greater awareness of how I think, how I respond under pressure, how I connect with people and how I show up as a leader.
As I prepare to take on larger teams and responsibilities, I know there is still more to learn but I now see leadership development differently. These are skills that can be practised, strengthened and continuously improved. And perhaps the most valuable change is that I no longer see growth as something that simply happens with experience. I now see it as something I can consciously work towards.
